How to Replace Window Sash Cords

Sash windows, commonly found in older homes, have one panel or multiple panels that slide up or out with a cast iron weight connected to cords on each sash. You may find the cord stops working or break, which causes them to not open and close properly. If you don't want to replace the window, it is possible to fix or replace the cord.

Prepare to Fix the Cord

To fix the sash cord, gather:

  • work gloves
  • tape measure
  • screwdriver
  • screws
  • pry bar
  • rubber mallet
  • putty knife
  • utility knife
  • small weights
  • replacement cords

Look on the window frame for wooden pieces called stops that secure the window, and allow the track to slide. Use a pry bar and mallet to pull the stops from the frame taking care not to damage them, and cut the paint with a utility knife.

Remove the Sashes

Raise the bottom sash, and hammer temporary screws into the sides of the wood below it. If you find metal edge guides (which may look like a "t"), detach the screws then the tracks. Don't be concerned about bending the screws slightly.

Bring the sash forward away from the frame, unfasten the sash cords, then detach the temporary screws. Look for parting strips, the pieces of wood that divide the window, and pry them with a putty knife.

Tilt the top sash away from the window to remove it, then unfasten the cord knot, then let the weights pull the cords to the top of the pulley. Set the window aside.

Replace the Cord

Loosen the panel screws with the screwdriver, and set parts aside Remove the weights and the cords. It is best to replace both cords at once and replace damaged weights.

Measure the old cord, and buy one to fit the pulley wheel. The cord should be made from cotton with a nylon center since nylon tends to jam. Trim the new cord to the size of the old cord, if needed.

Connect a heavy screw or nail to a string, and feed the string over the top sash pulley. The weight should force the string down. Detach the screw or nail, secure the opposite string end to one sash cord, and guide it through the pulley by pulling the string.

Place the upper sash back on the window, and pull the sting over the pullet. Unfasten the string, make a knot on the end of the new cord, and pull it until the weight comes to the top of the pulley, then connect it to the slot on the sash side.

Reinstall the parting strips, and repeat for the lower sash. Reinstall the weight panels, stops, and metal strips. For more information on replacement windows, contact your local window contractor today.
